Tree Information Reports

The primary purpose of the City of Ottawa’s Tree Protection By-law is to ensure that trees are protected from injury or destruction. However there are situations where a tree that is protected (under the by-law) requires to be removed. In these instances a Tree Information Report is required when applying for permission to remove a protected or distinctive tree.

Depending on why the tree requires removal will determine what type of tree information report the City of Ottawa requires.

Report Type

Here's a flow chart that outlines what report is required

Types of tree Information Reports

Short - No Development

If you need to remove a tree for various reasons not associated with infill development the Short or regular tree information report is required.

Long - Infill Development

Any tree removals associated with infill developments or Committee of Adjustment applications for construction will require the Full or long tree information report. Greater detail for tree removal and tree preservation and protection requirements is a proponent for this report.

Applications Fees

Application fees differ between these two report types and are non-refundable. Let us guide you through the process.

NEW Tree Permit Application Fees as of February 1, 2024!

As of February 1, 2024, the tree permit application fees are increasing. The application fee for a permit to remove a City-owned tree or a distinctive tree that is unrelated to infill development will increase from $162 per tree to $174 per tree, maximized after 5 trees, by ownership. The application fee for tree removal associated with infill development will increase from $685 per tree to $870 per tree, maximized after 5 trees, by ownership

Urban or Suburban

Location, Location, Location

NEW! Distinctive tree size decrease! As of February 1, 2024, in the suburban area, private trees measuring 30 cm or more in diameter at breast height will be protected by the Tree Protection By-law and require a tree permit for removal.

This council approved By-law amendment ensures the urban and suburban areas are subject to the same diameter requirements.
